A charming matched pair of ceramic rooster salt and pepper shakers with the rounded, cartoonish proportions and loose hand-painted style that’s instantly recognizable as mid-century folk pottery. Each bird sits in a plump, upright pose with a fan-shaped tail swept wide, bright orange-red comb, bold black bead eyes, and a cheerful smiling beak. The glaze work is classic of the era: vivid yellow chest, white body, and brown brushstroke feather markings applied freely by hand — no two strokes quite alike.

The shaker holes are visible on the front chest of each piece. Both shakers are present and match well, with the slight variation in brushwork you’d expect from hand-painted production pottery.

This style — chunky, glossy, and colorful — was produced widely from the 1940s through the 1970s, with Japan, Taiwan, and domestic US potteries all turning out similar farmyard shaker sets for the mid-century kitchen. They fit right in alongside other cottage and farmhouse tableware of the period.
